意味

技術英語で使いそうなcompatibilityの意味として主に以下の２つがあげられます。

ランダムハウス

1.データの互換性
2.両立の可能性

形容詞のcompatibleの記載はしっかり書いてありますが、compatibilityに関してはかなり簡潔に記されています。少しわかりにくいですね。英英辞書だと同じことがもう少し丁寧に書いてあります。

1.technical the ability of one piece of computer equipment to be used with another one, especially when they are made by different companies
2.the ability to exist or be used together without causing problems

＊２の意味は「適合性」という言葉で言い換えられることもあります。

修飾方法

基本の形はA compatibility of B with Cです。
このA,B,Cはそれぞれ以下を表します。

A：どんな種類/分野の適合性（互換性）か
B：何の適合性/互換性か
C：何に対する適合性/互換性か

一つ例文をあげてみます。

特性を説明する時には、特性 of 名詞の形で表します。

• 所有格を使う：One’s compatibility

無生物の-‘sに関する考察

基本的に無生物名詞は所有格にしてはいけないと言われているが、「英文法解説」によると以下の場合は、文語的にはなるが無生物であっても-‘sの形をとれる
国名（England’s history）
時間・距離を表す語（Today’s menu）
慣用句（a stone’s throw from here）
しかし実際にはlongmanの例文として使われている”the system’s”のように上記３つの場合以外も無生物名詞にも-‘sがつくことはある。この基準はネイティブスピーカーの感覚によるところ大きく、明確なルールがないのが現状。（「英文法解説」より）
以上のことから私的な意見としては、明確なルールがない以上、技術英語においては無生物名詞の場合は所有格は避けてofを使って表現するのが無難かと思います。

C:何に対する適合性/互換性か

• withを使って表現します。

規程などでwithの代わりにwith respect toを使っているのをたまに見かけますが、
With respect toは法令などに使うかなり固い表現。
取説などに使うには固すぎるのでwithの方が良いです。

以上が基本の修飾方法ですが、このA,B,Cを原文に合わせて削除して
The compatibility with the systemとしたり、Electromagnetic compatibility of new systemsと表現したりすることももちろん可能です。
